$1,000 Scholarship for 2012
Essay on The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen



 
Eligibility Requirements:  This scholarship is open to female high school seniors residing in Snohomish County who are U.S. citizens and who plan to attend an accredited college/university for the 2012-2013 school year.

Scholarship Amount:  $1,000 to be used for college tuition and/or books.  The scholarship award will be deposited in the winner's name at the accredited college/university designated by the winner.

Submission Deadline:  March 1, 2012
Winners to be Announced:  May 2, 2012
Essay Requirements:
  1. The student will read the book, The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen and write a 1000 - 1500 word essay.  The 5000 Year Leap is available at most bookstores, libraries and at Amazon.com.  If you need to purchase a copy of the book, contact Evergreen Republican Women's Club at Contact Us.
  2. The following three criteria must be included in the applicant's essay:
a)  Describe the extremes of the political spectrum as viewed by our Founders.  Where did they want America to be on that spectrum?  Do you believe that America is currently in that point of the spectrum today?  Explain.

b)  Skousen lays out the 28 principles that founded this nation, which resulted in more progress in 200 years than had been achieved in the previous 5000 years.  Choose four topics from the list below to include in your essay.  For each topic, discuss the Founders perspective on that topic and what the ramifications might be to America if we do not adhere to that perspective.
i)  Why we need virtuous and moral leaders
ii)  The role of religion in a society that is based on personal freedom and liberty
iii)  Why the Founders chose a republic instead of a democracy, and what the benefits of a republic are tot he citizens
iv)  Why the Founders thought that government should ensure equal rights, but not equal things
v)  What was the Founders view on national debt
vi)  The relationship between the ownership of property and liberty
vii)  Why a strong local self-government is so important to freedom
c)  Explain the impact that reading this book had on you.
